Textual Analysis: The Black Hole

The short film I will be analysing is The Black Hole. The film was directed by 'Phil and Olly'. I found the film on You Tube on the future shorts page. The typical genre that could be associated with this short film could be futuristic/ villan type film as the man in the film is stealing money from a vault using a paper with a black hole on it which allows you to reach in though doors and unlocking them etc. from the outside by reaching into the black hole on the paper.

The story line to this short film is about a sleep deprived office worker who is working overtime and discovers a black hole of the piece of paper that comes out of the photocopier. These is basic continuity editing in some areas of the film eg. like when the photocopier won't work there is a shot of him pressing the button then a reaction shot of him to show how frustrated and tired he is there is the a second shot of him pressing the button and then a shot of him kicking the the photocopier to show his anger. There is a lot of fast editing here which is used effectively in this shot.   

As the photocopier starts to print the shots are longer e.g. there is a shot of paper with a black hole on it and then a shot of him moving it. There are more slower edits here to show more of what he is doing unlike in the last shots of him pressing the button they were more close up as these where medium shots.

The sound in this short film is very effective. The diagetic sounds of the photocopier is consistently running form start to finnish but as he moves into other rooms you can faintly here it in the background. The sounds in these shots sound a lot louder than they do in a packed office as this is an empty office you can hear the sounds a lot clearer, if they sounded quiet the actions on screen would not sound realistic. There are also non-diagetic sounds when he puts his and in the black hole, this sound adds a very mysterious effect to the viewer.    

The lighting in this film is very dull and dark adding a typical office feel to it. The costume that the actor wears is a typical shirt and tie which makes him look like an office worker, his tie is also loosely fastend to show that he is tired and as been working all day. The acting in this film is significant, I believe that this film would not of worked well if the actor did not look tired. If the actor was neatly dressed unlike the actor in this film it wouldn't of gave the same effect on the viewer.
